I've been away from the Los Dos in La Jolla for awhile. They have a new menu and their prices are high. But the carne asada burrito was top notch - big and greasy with a fresh tortilla. Surpringly did not find any gristle in the meat!

I've got to say I was impressed by the Chipolte burrito. I've had it before and knocked it because its mostly rice and beans filler. While this remains true, the humongous size of the thing and satisfied and full feeling I had after eating made me a convert. Let me stress this is not an authentic burrito and it is pricey at almost $7. Even with these facts I'll still look forward to my next overstuffed Chipolte burrito.

The good news is that another taco shop is open in La Jolla. The bad news is their mascot is a giant rat. Mr. Taco recently opened in the area where Sr. Buenos went out. The breakfast burritos were pretty average. They contain beans by default which I'm not a huge fan of. The machaca was really tasty though. Even though the portions aren't large or particularly distinct, I would still patronize this authentic joint.

Why this year's beanbash burrito was the best ever:
Baloons, party streamers, party hats, spongbob plates, tablecloths, free burritos, multiple birthday celebration, feliz cumpleanos over the speaker, dessert, multiple poop stops, popping baloons, go-carts, go-cart crashes, $3 snicker bars, and great friends

This is the only burrito I've ever encountered which I'd advocate splitting. On your own it'd be tough, but Alana and I had no problem finishing our halves with an order of fries. This thing is sloppy, mostly a pile of rice and beans, but isn't that what burritos are all about?

Suspicion was afoot when we tasted this 'Chicken cordeon bleu' burrito from Deli-icious. Being so distant from the bean burrito, I worried this burrito would cause me to blow cordeon bleu chunks. Due to bicycle delivery it was unnecessary to actually get up and walk anywhere, so this burrito was actually off to a good start. In the end, it was remarkably delicious and quite a value at $3.00. Half a burrito and a Prospect, you can't go wrong.

It's time I gave the Rimel's Mahi Mahi Burrito the accolades it deserves. Today at lunch we determined it is "Best of Breed" for it's class of burrito. This gave way to a debate over classification of burrito establishments into two wide categories, "authentic" and "restaurant style". After much discussion it was determined "authentic" restaurants have both the menu posted on the wall as well as a window in which you can pick up food. "Restaurant" style offer burritos which cost in excess of $4. What really screwed us up was Taco Bell, which has the menu on the wall and a pickup window. We were thinking a new menu item should be the furtado.

The best thing about Senior Buenos is not their burritos. It's their name. Everything is bueno at Senior Buenos! They also have the place decorated with full sized plastic dogs, it makes me wonder what they have to do with the food?!
Anyways their carne asada is decent. No complaints - a nice filling burrito. I added cheese which was a welcome addition. They also make a mean carne asada nachos when they are out of frys.

One of the best breakfast burritos I've had. Don't order their breakfast burritos off the menu - they have beans which kind of kills it. Substitute guac and you have a real winner. Serve with chilled horchata.

Serious chaos with the after bar drunks. I couldnt believe what happened. The guy in front of me and I both ordered carne asada. I waited for friggin ever for my burrito and right before they were ready to wrap it, the guy in front of me started literally YELLING for them to put the rest of the beef on the grill into his tortilla. Excuse me? Thats my carne. They gave it to him to get him out of there... shit. They remade the burrito and threw in free nachos which made me fill a little bit better.

Alana was adament that they had the best bean and cheese in la jolla so I gave Ortegas another chance. I ordered my burrito "double wrapped", that is beans wrapped in a toritilla wrapped in a tortilla. Unfortunatly there were not enough beans inside there to make this enjoyable and I had to go through the shameful process of unwrapping and shedding a tortilla. I was worried someone from behind the counter would tell me that you eat the wrapper too.
The bean burrito wasn't that great but the carne asada and carnitas at the table did looked tasty. I'll need to give that a go next time.

Tried the new "Fajita Grilled Stuft Burrito" - steak, rice, fajita vegetables and a "zesty fajita sauce".
For a taco bell premium item it was small. You're better off with a gordita or a "zesty bowl". Or 99 bean burritos.

Pollo and Papas is unique - it's a burritos and fried chicken joint. Although seldom paired could they be made for one another?
I ordered a Bob burrito which consists of fried rice, grilled chicken, cheese, tomato, onion and jalepeno. This big burrito seemed to have a good mix was served with a side of fries - a nice touch.
I found mostly rice in the tortilla, the cheese and jalepeno add a bit of flavor. On the whole disappointing. A lot of food though.

Checking out the burritos in Beantown I was led by recommendation to Viva Burrito. I ordered a steak and spinach burrito (with cheese and sour cream for $1 extra).
Although the size of this thing was massive the burrito was doomed from the start. The fold was not good and there was leakage from the moment I picked it up. The tortilla was without taste and 90% of the innards were rice. They forgot to put the cheese in there and I couldn't taste the spinach.
Shamefully near the end I had to take a fork to the misshapen pile of slop on my plate.

A glorious welcome home burrito after a weekend out of town. This burrito from the Alibertos drive through was pretty incredible. I'd say this meat is LEAST likely to be carne de burro - that is to say it was incredibly tender and tasty. I also dig on the tomato and cilantro inside - almost a perfect balance. Light on the guac if you're into that.
I do have to credit Danny Diamond on this one - while watching the premire of the Anna Nicole show he expounded on his burrito views, including Alibertos. Danny, a great burrito connoisseur and master of the 99cent value menu.

Flying through Pittsburgh in the early morning hours and in need of breakfast. Decided on a breakfast burrito and steak bagel from MickeyD's. Burrito was only 99 cents but pretty puny in size. Recommend three for a complete meal. Other than that, for a McDonalds I'll take it. Mostly egg and cheese with a runny red sauce. Tortilla not very authentic but what can you expect?

Grabbed a late nite bean and cheese at the Los 2 Pedros in PB. Unlike their disgraceful namesake in La Jolla, the cheese actually is melted and subsequently delicious. Looks like they've been raising prices - 60 cents for a carrot?!

Continued my exploration of the 'California Burrito'. This time around it contained carne asada + cheese + potato + 2 eggs. Even though i was wasted I thought the meat was tough to chew ... eggs were tasty though. 89 cent fish taco was a bargain.

I was offered a frozen microwaveable Tina's Bean and Cheese burrito at work. I have to say the rating of three sombreros was heavily influenced by the fact that these things retail for 25 cents! Surprisingly edible for that price. Let's send these to starving african nations (or better yet starving mexicans).

I ordered a "California Burrito" - essentially this is the carne asada burrito plus potato (french fries) and cheese. Absolutely delicious. The carne asada meat is relatively lean and the salsa spicy.

Introduced Baja Fresh to my bro's two friends while they were in town. Word to the wise - After Baja Fresh wait at least 1 hour or 1 shit (whichever comes first) before attempting to drink beer.

As mentioned earlier, the mahi burrito from Moondoggies is a solid meal.

I was surprised to see that they actually deep fried the (meat they called) bacon. I guess it makes perfect sense, although if you cook bacon in a pan you end up with a deep fryer anyways. The potato in the burrito were actually chopped up french fries.
The only way to enjoy this was to douse it with red hot sauce.

A surprisingly uninteresting Burrito Ultimo from Baja Fresh. Too much rice, not enough of the good stuff. I tried added some hot peppers to spice it up but that didn't really do the trick.

Acting on a tip I stopped by Taco & Burrito Palace #2 with Michael and Jeremy while visiting Chicago. The cook was happy to create a burrito with approximately 80% cheese content. Maybe I'm spoiled by SoCal burritos, maybe the problem was my complete sobriety, but this burrito didn't do it for me. However nearly everyone I spoke with in Chicago recommended this place and the staff was awesome (they'll let you behind to roll your own burrito) so they're doing something right.

At last I tried the much touted mahi burrito from Moondoggies. Let's get one thing straight - this thing is HUGE. A bit of a departure from the usual burritos I've had, this one is filled mostly with fish and rice. The whole thing is laden with a light and delicious white sauce that really pulls everything together. I really enjoyed this burrito - bring your appetite, it will not disappoint.
